Announcing our first session in the Online Seminar Series for 2025

Join the Highland Park Recorder Society on January 6, 2025 for "Kicking it up a Notch," an online seminar presented by recorder player and conductor Lewis R. Baratz.

Log in with your favorite soprano or alto recorder in hand, as we learn ways to improve our recorder technique, including air support, embouchure, finger technique, and articulation, all with the goal of adding to the joy of the recorder player.

Attendees will have the opportunity to try out their new technique abilities in the musical examples by Jacob van Eyck, Daniel Purcell, and George Philippe Telemann. The Zoom session opens at 7:15 PM EST for a meet and greet, and the instruction will begin at 7:30 PM EST.

To register and pay, please visit the registration page and email recorderdonna@gmail.com to receive the music in advance and a Zoom link the day before. We look forward to having you with us!

Some comments from the evaluations on Lewis’s teaching –

“Lewis is obviously knowledgeable and on top of that, an excellent teacher. The audio and musical excerpts plus having a live player perform them was perfect. Like many of us, I’ve been to more than a few sessions on articulation, but this was exemplary in showing the differences while also grounding them in history and literature of the various periods.” S.H., Nov. 2022, in British Columbia, Canada

“Lewis Baratz is an excellent presenter, has vast knowledge of music and shares it freely. His slides are excellent, and the examples are spot-on helpful. He also invites knowledgeable guest presenters. This class is a hidden gem.”

“Lewis Baratz is a knowledgeable and skilled presenter. He clearly knows the material well. He uses slides and examples well. His enthusiasm is infectious.”

“One of the best musical talks I have ever been to. More information than I could digest but I am not a musicologist. Entertainingly presented. Very clear. I was not expecting anything this excellent.”

“I find this seminar series one of the most well organized, intellectually interesting ones that I attend and I am always impressed with the level of expertise of the people delivering the content, and their respect and responsiveness to the participants, regardless of playing ability. Definitely plan to attend if available on zoom!”
